Thomas Lyte Modern Heritage Award

Hummingbird Vase Large Bowl Medium Bowl Small Bowl

Jessica was one of 9 entrants short listed for the Thomas Lyte Modern Heritage Award, 2008.  The competition was supported by the Crafts Council and open to emerging makers, with up to three years professional experience, in the categories of silver & fine metals, glass, wood and leather.  The brief, which was to design a functional object(s) for home or travel, was judged on imagination, innovation and ‘Englishness’, as defined by the Thomas Lyte brand.  Winners will be announced at Origin 2008, with the winner’s piece (and possibly work of other shortlisted applicants) being put into production by Thomas Lyte.

Jessica’s range of blown glass Bird vases and bowls is inspired by the Victorian era, with its love of dark, rich colours and fascination with natural history – a period synonymous with Englishness.  The vases and bowls consist of a plain colour on the outside, overlaid with white to the inside, which appears semi-transparent.  The inside is highly decorated with transfers of birds taken from Jessica’s own hand-drawn images which are applied, then re-fired in the hotshop.
