Bird, Bee, Beetle & Fish Bowls (info)

Bird Bowl Bee Bowl Beetle Bowl Fish Bowl

Developed over a number of years from work originally produced as part of my M.A., these 37cm 'transfer' bowls come in bird, bee, beetle & fish designs and encorporate transfers taken from my own, hand-drawn and coloured illustrations.

Whilst the use of transfers on ceramics is fairly commonplace, their use on decorative glassware is much more unusual, the translucence of the glass bringing a different quality to the finished piece.  Each bowl takes around one week to make and requires three separate kiln-firings, with the transfers painstakingly applied by hand after the first.

Measurements: 37cm diameter x 7cm depth.

Matching coasters also available.

Flat Pack Birdcage (info)

Flat Pack Birdcage Flat Pack Birdcage Flat Pack Birdcage bird detail Flat Pack Birdcage finial detail

The 'Flat Pack Birdcage' is the ultimate in disposable luxury!  The intricate component parts are cut by waterjet from 6mm thick sheets of glass.  Once cut, each part is then sandblasted and fire polished before being painstakingly assembled using traditional 'tabs and slots'.

A must for the time-poor bird fancier, the cage needs no cleaning or maintenance and comes complete with cast glass bird that, conveniently, requires no feeding!

Intended as a light-hearted comment on the throw-away society in which we live, in reality the birdcage is highly impractical, due to the complexity of its production and its evident fragility.

Measurements approx 17cm x 17cm x 49cm (height).  Can be made by commission to specific colours.

Rocky Mountain Sheep Series: Large Landscape (info)

Large Sheep Column - Amber Large Sheep Column - Green & Yellow Large Sheep Column - Exhibition space, Amber Large Column - Green & Yellow

The Rocky Mountain Sheep Series is inspired by the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and its wildlife.  Each piece consists of a tapered glass base - the 'landscape' - cast using the painstaking 'lost wax' process then highly polished, on top of which are balanced precariously a number of exquisitely detailed, cast bronze figurines, which have been hand cold-finished and patinated.

Designed to emphasise the beauty of the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep and its habitat, the pieces also have an intended element of humour, with each piece featuring the sheep in various poses (not all of which are entirely natural!), carefully balanced on their glass bases.  The bases are striking in their simplicity - an abstracted landscape, with sharp geometric shapes and a smooth finish, which contrasts with its highly detailed bronze 'inhabitants'.  Vivid colour has been used for the bases so as to reflect the striking natural colours of the Rockies.  These colours change throughout the day depending upon the light.

Large Sheep Landscape: A larger, single version of the smaller landscape, but with four sheep 'squeezed' on to the top.  Approx dimensions: 12cm x 12cm (bottom of glass base), 28cm height (of glass column, not including sheep which vary).

Commissions can also be made to specific colours.  Please email info@jessicairena.com for further details or any other enquiries.
